Overview

A look at stackstats.app
StackStats is a desktop application designed for Substack writers to analyze newsletter data without relying on Substack's built-in dashboard. The app runs entirely on your local machine, processing subscriber data to provide insights that Substack doesn't display natively.
Key capabilities include identifying subscriber engagement segments (Champions, Loyalists, At-Risk, Ghosts), calculating individual churn risk scores from 0–100, analyzing cohort retention across the last 12 cohorts, correlating content performance to subscriber growth, and forecasting 90-day subscriber growth. The app also determines the best day and hour to send posts based on when your readers actually open emails, identifies superfans and power users, and provides geographic audience breakdowns by country and US state.
The application supports optional AI insights through either free offline processing via Ollama or by bringing your own API key for Claude, GPT-4, Gemini, Groq, or OpenRouter. All data remains on your computer—there is no server, no user account, and no cloud processing. The software is available for macOS 10.15+ and Windows 10+ as a one-time purchase with annual update subscriptions available.

FAQ
- Does StackStats work without internet?
- Yes. Everything runs locally on your machine. AI is optional and not required for the app to run. You can use Ollama for free offline AI, or choose a cloud provider if you want those features.
- Where is my data stored?
- On your computer. StackStats reads your CSV files, computes everything in-app, and never sends data anywhere. There's no server, no account, no cloud for data processing.
- Is AI required to use StackStats?
- No. All analytics tabs work without any AI. AI adds a strategy layer with growth analysis, engagement insights, a 30-day plan, and a chat window, but it's entirely optional.
- What happens after my 1-year update period?
- You keep using the last version you have forever with no restrictions or feature lockout. If you want another year of updates, you can renew for $29, and the renewal discount never expires.
- How many devices can I use StackStats on?
- If you buy the yearly license, you can only use it on a single device. If you buy the lifetime license, you can use it on up to 3 devices.
