A look at statelicense.io

StateLicense is an independent platform that aggregates and normalizes public contractor license records from multiple state licensing authorities. It provides a public lookup, web dashboard, and REST API for verifying contractor credentials across Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, New York City, New York State public work, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

The platform serves SaaS platforms, marketplaces, and workforce products that need to verify contractor-supplied license numbers during onboarding and compliance monitoring. Records are normalized across different state formats and status labels while retaining source attribution, and include details like license number, business name, status, classifications, and freshness timestamps.

StateLicense is not a government agency. It retains the source authority as the official record and recommends confirming important decisions directly with licensing authorities. The service offers both a free tier with 10 public lookups per day or 25 authenticated requests monthly, and paid plans for higher-volume verification workflows.

FAQ

How do I verify a contractor's license in Virginia?
Select Virginia and search by business name or verify the contractor's license number. Match the business identity, license class, specialties, and dates to the record. Coverage includes current DPOR contractor business licenses, not inactive or disciplinary history.
Can I check a contractor's license for free?
Yes. You can use up to 10 public search or verification requests per IP each UTC day without creating an account. Coverage is limited to the listed datasets, which include NYC licenses and a separate statewide public-work registry in New York, business licenses in Delaware, and manual exports in Alaska.
What do I do if a contractor's license doesn't show up?
Check the jurisdiction, license number, and business spelling, then try the other lookup method. A missing result does not establish that a contractor is unlicensed. Review dataset coverage and confirm the record with the licensing authority if it is still missing.
How fresh is the license data?
California, Connecticut, Minnesota, New York State public work, Oregon, Texas, Washington, and NYC DOB refresh daily. Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Virginia, and NYC DCWP refresh weekly. Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, and Tennessee use manual snapshot imports with no or limited source update timestamps.
Is there a free tier for testing license lookups?
Yes. The Free plan includes an API key and 25 authenticated dashboard or API search and verification requests per UTC calendar month. The free public lookup allows up to 10 search or verification requests per IP each UTC day.
