A look at speedle.io

Speedle is an open-source authorization engine for managing access control in cloud-native and legacy applications. It externalizes fine-grained authorization decisions using a human-readable policy language, allowing developers to define access control policies once and manage them centrally across multiple services and languages.

The system combines RBAC (role-based access control) and ABAC (attribute-based access control) for precise access decisions. It consists of a policy definition language (SPDL), a Policy Management Service, an Authorization Decision Service, and a command-line tool, which can be used individually or together based on system needs.

Speedle+ is the current open-source version, maintained by its founding members under the Universal Permissive License. It evolved from Oracle Speedle and draws on 30 years of authorization product development experience.

Feature notes

  • Simple Policy Language - Express authorization intent in human-readable SPDL
  • Cloud Native - Run across clouds with pluggable infrastructure interfaces
  • Real-time Policy Discovery - Observe runtime interactions and turn access patterns into enforceable policies
  • RBAC and ABAC - Combine roles and attributes for precise access decisions
  • Centralized Management - Manage policy for disparate services from one place
  • Pluggable Identity - Connect GitHub, Okta or your own identity provider
  • Bring Your Own Storage - Use etcd or implement the persistence interface for your storage layer

FAQ

Who is Speedle for?
Speedle is an open source project for access management that can be embedded in systems wherever access control is required, so developers don't have to hard code authorization policies in their code.
Why does Speedle have no built-in auth mechanisms?
Speedle focuses on authorization. It does not cover authentication functionality, which is a separate concern.
How is Speedle different from OPA, Kubernetes RBAC, and Istio RBAC?
Kubernetes RBAC and Istio RBAC focus on authorization issues in their specific systems, while Speedle and OPA are general-purpose authorization solutions. Other general-purpose options include Casbin and Ladon.
What is the future plan for Speedle?
Speedle will be maintained as an open source project with bug fixes and additional features.
