A look at selvedge.sh

Selvedge is a local MCP server and CLI for recording code decisions, stated reasoning, and rejected approaches so they can be retrieved in later sessions. It stores decision history in a SQLite database next to your code with no hosted backend required. Agents call Selvedge tools as they work, logging changes with their reasoning; you or other agents can query this history before making edits to understand what was tried before and why approaches were rejected.

The tool works through either MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration with compatible AI agents or a command-line interface with shell access. All storage is local and runs without network dependencies. Selvedge captures the reasoning from the agent's own context at the time of change, and validates reasoning quality to surface when agents are logging without capturing actual intent.

FAQ

What is Selvedge?
Selvedge is a local MCP server and CLI for recording code decisions, stated reasoning, and rejected approaches so they can be retrieved in later sessions.
Is Selvedge open source?
Yes, Selvedge is MIT-licensed. The source code is available on GitHub at github.com/masondelan/selvedge.
How do I stop my agent repeating a mistake it already made?
Give it a queryable per-entity history and make checking it the first instruction. The agent calls prior_attempts on an entity before editing; a reverted prior attempt comes back with the reasoning for the revert, and the agent plans around it.
What if I'm using a different AI tool?
Selvedge works with anyone using a compatible agent. You can connect through local stdio MCP or use the CLI with shell access. Setup presets are conveniences, not a compatibility limit; other compatible clients can be configured manually.
What's the one-line description?
