A look at promptsign.ai

PromptSign.ai is a PKI (public key infrastructure) system for AI instruction files that signs and verifies AI skills, agents, and configuration files. It provides cryptographic proof of who published a skill and confirms that no byte has changed since signing.

The tool offers four core guarantees: origin authentication showing exactly who published something under a verified identity, integrity verification that nothing has changed, accountability through a public transparency log, and revocability to stop trusting compromised keys or bad actors. It does not prove harmlessness, only provenance.

PromptSign works by taking a SHA-256 hash fingerprint of every file, signing those fingerprints under a verified identity (such as GitHub, Google, or Microsoft accounts), and shipping the signature in a .promptsign/bundle.json file with the skill. Verification can happen offline without any server connection.

Feature notes

  • Sign skills and agents with verified identity authentication
  • Verify file integrity using SHA-256 fingerprints
  • Offline verification without internet connection
  • Public transparency log for accountability
  • Revoke trust for compromised keys or bad actors
  • Support GitHub, Google, Microsoft and company account authentication
  • Command-line tool for integration with Claude and Codex hooks

FAQ

What does a signature prove?
A signature proves who published a skill and that the content has not changed. It does not prove that the content is safe or harmless.
Can I verify signatures offline?
Yes, verification can happen completely offline. PromptSign re-fingerprints every file and confirms the signature without requiring any server or internet connection.
What authentication methods are supported?
PromptSign supports authentication with GitHub, Google, Microsoft, and company accounts to verify the identity of the publisher.
Is a command-line tool required to use PromptSign?
No, installing the command-line tool is optional. Browser-based tools provide the same signing and verification functionality, and no file content leaves your computer when using the in-browser tools.
