MacID

Face ID authentication for Mac

MacID unlocks your Mac with facial recognition by integrating with macOS authentication through PAM, recognizing your face on-device, and keeping your Keychain

Overview

A look at akshith.io

MacID brings Face ID-like authentication to Mac computers. After you reach the password field and press return, MacID uses your Mac's camera to recognize your face. If it matches what it has stored, you're logged in; if not, the password bar wiggles like a wrong password entry.

The system integrates into macOS authentication through PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules), running a PAM module at the lock screen that communicates with a desktop app in your menu bar. The desktop app holds the actual face recognition service and camera permissions. Face recognition uses a pretrained model that achieves 99.5% accuracy with 0% false acceptance rate on a standard dataset.

MacID preserves your Keychain functionality by securely storing your password in the Mac's Secure Enclave after you provide it once, then using it to unlock your Keychain after face authentication. You can still use your password normally at any time. Like Touch ID, MacID requires your password after restart or hibernation before face unlock works again.

FAQ

How does MacID unlock your Mac?
You reach the password field, press return, and if MacID recognizes your face it logs you in. If not, the password bar wiggles like a wrong password entry. You can still enter your password normally at any time.
Does MacID work after restart or hibernation?
No, similar to Touch ID, MacID requires your password after a restart or hibernation before face unlock can work again.
How does MacID unlock your Keychain after face authentication?
MacID asks for your password once during setup, checks it, and encrypts it with a key stored in your Mac's Secure Enclave. After face unlock, it uses this to unlock your Keychain. If you change your password, MacID detects this and asks for the new one.
