Checkbox
Subscription-law compliance as an API
API that checks subscription businesses against automatic-renewal laws across sign-up, emails, and cancellation, providing compliance plans and evidence.
Overview

A look at checkbox.site
Checkbox is an API that ensures subscription businesses comply with automatic-renewal laws including the federal ROSCA and state-level requirements. It checks sign-up disclosures and consent, acknowledgment emails, trial and renewal reminders, and online cancellation flows across 29 jurisdictions with 204 documented requirements.
The platform collects evidence from four sources: a synthetic shopper that tests checkouts in each state, JavaScript snippets on customer pages, billing platform settings from Stripe, Shopify and Recharge, and captured transactional emails. It stores evidence in a hash-chained, signed vault and returns machine-readable compliance plans with exact fixes for developers.
Checkbox integrates with AI coding agents through an MCP server or API, allowing agents to set up compliance automatically. For manual integration, it offers preflight checks, drop-in Elements for disclosures, webhooks, test subscriptions, and detailed monitoring. The service is free with fair-use limits and includes all compliance features, every state, and no credit card required.

FAQ
- Is Checkbox really free?
- Yes. Every compliance feature is included with no plan limits and no credit card required. Fair-use limits keep the service healthy; if you need more, you can email them to raise limits.
- What is the difference between test mode and live mode?
- New accounts get test keys immediately. Test mode is an isolated sandbox where preflight checks, Elements and test runs all work. Live mode turns on when you verify your domain with a DNS record or a file.
- Is Checkbox legal advice?
- No. Checkbox is software that reports what it observed, which requirement it relates to, and how to fix it. The rules catalog is drafted from primary sources and pending attorney review; you should have counsel review your program.
- Which laws does Checkbox check against?
- Checkbox checks against the federal Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (ROSCA), EFTA/Regulation E for recurring debits, and state automatic-renewal laws listed on the Laws page, each with its citation and effective date.
- How will Checkbox make money if it is free?
- Checkbox plans to make money from the Checkbox Warranty, a separate product for merchants who keep passing Checkbox checks under monitoring. It is not available yet and nothing is charged for it today.
